Voting Results: By-Laws Amendment Passes

The major By-Laws amendment passed on November 1, 2006. Thanks to everyone for their participation, patience and support in the necessary discussion to get to this point.

The mandatory 15-day discussion period took place on October 13-28. Voting occurred for the 72-hour period from 9PM Sunday, October 29 to 9PM Wednesday, November 1.

Voting took place only among the few who had paid dues during the brief experiment with a dues-based membership. The total count was 4 in favor and 0 opposed, which passes the required 2/3 mark.

Effective immediately, the new By-Laws are the rules which govern the South Bay Community Network, Inc and all Special Interest Groups organized under these By-Laws.

The next step for the current members is to vote in the new members under the new membership structure. With the amendment, this is no longer a dues-based membership system. The new structure was modeled with some similarity to the Apache Software Foundation, which also serves as an umbrella for volunteer-based projects.

New members may be voted in by the membership after being nominated by any of the following:

  • any three members
  • any Special Interest Group
  • the Board of Directors
Membership in the corporation is intended for people interested in participating in the umbrella organization function or supporting multiple Special Interest Groups.

It is not necessary to be a member of the corporation to participate in any Special Interest Group, forum or social event. It is required to be a member of the corporation in order to be an officer of any Special Interest Group, in order to have an organizational bond strong enough to make sure all our volunteers are protected under the Volunteer Protection Act of 1997.
